Osteopenia: Bone Density
<< Women's Health Testimonials
In February of 1998, bone density testing indicated that my neck and spine were 2.3 standard deviations below normal and I was diagnosed with osteopenia. By July 1999, my spine continued to deteriorate and was diagnosed with osteoporosis.
The treatment included Fosamex (medication for osteo with side effects for the stomach), vitamin supplements (Vitamin D and Calcium/Magnesium) and exercise. I also took an estrogen replacement to offset the effects (including the osteo) of a complete hysterectomy done 10 years ago.
In February 2001, I was referred to an Endocrinologist to assist in relieving some of the uncomfortable side effects of the hysterectomy. He found my testosterone levels to be nonexistent and recommended a course of treatment that utilized over the counter DHEA (hormone). I have gone from 50 to 100mg/day of the DHEA. It was hoped that the DHEA would not only stimulate the production of testosterone, but also have some effect on my bone density problems. My annual physical was in June and the doctor summarized my osteo treatment as follows:
Osteopenia. Patient continues on estrase every day as well as about 1000mg of calcium and vitamin D. A year ago follow-up on bone density showed significant osteopenia but no change from previous years and, therefore, we continued her on calcium, vitamin D, exercise and estrogen replacement, but no bisphophonate. Patient is very intense with her exercise and she is taking calcium as mentioned above. I have asked her to increase the calcium to 1500mg a day, 400 units of vitamin D, continue to exercise. We will check a bone density study and see if there is a need to restart the Fosamex.
The follow-up bone study was done within a week of the physical. I have had a bone density scan almost every year and below you will see the results of the last 5 years. Please note that the only change in my treatment plan for osteo since 2/04 was the addition of acupuncture for osteopenia provided by Ms. Lisa Bernazani. I believe the numbers speak for themselves.
